They say when you’re in Melbourne, you must brunch! And what better place to brunch at than at the popular Hardware Societe, located on Hardware Lane? The lane is filled with cafes and restaurants open for breakfast but somehow only one particular shop has a long queue in front, at 9am! Traveling with 2 young kids is not easy, and we almost considered changing our minds when we saw the long wait but knowing the foodie in me, it would just mean we’d come back again another day, so we might as well soldier on!
And soldiered on we did. Thankfully the wait was not too bad, about 20 minutes when we were called in. Service was prompt and friendly, and our food arrived quite quickly too.
While we have had better coffee elsewhere, I just couldn’t stop slurping my perfectly done Baked Eggs with chorizo. I have had baked eggs before and they were usually a tad too overdone for my liking but these were fabulous! The eggs were still runny and smooth, mixed with cheese, potatoes and toasted nuts, were just a delightful mix of textures and flavours! I just couldn’t stop dipping my crusty bread into the eggs and then further scooping up more of the runny eggs into my mouth. And when you’re done, you could scrape the crispy eggs bits off the side of the dish, so satisfying. I would recommend ordering this dish without a doubt.
Saucer had the Eggs Benedict with Lobster, which apparently didn’t wow him as much. To him, it was still just poached eggs on a bun but with the addition of lobster underneath. These were served on a charcoal brioche bun instead of say, sourdough, which would have made it more gourmet?
Halfway through our meal, the baby started screaming since it was close to his nap time. So we had to rush the second half of meal through.
All in all, there were some hits and misses but I thoroughly enjoyed my baked eggs and wouldn’t mind returning just for them. If you have kids, make sure you allocate some time waiting for a table!
