Disappointed at The Forbes

  • Sharebar

Last weekend, we bought a Groupon deal promising a 3-course set meal with wine at The Forbes Hotel, Sydney, with the promise that the meal would look something like  this:

Picture shown on Groupon website

We made our reservation a week before with a waiter who seemed busy and rushed, but we didn’t mind since we managed to get a Saturday night booking. Thinking that it would be a busy evening for the restaurant and judging from the amount of Groupons sold, we made it a point to arrive on time even though our ferry was delayed (more on that on the next post). We must have ran the last few hundred metres to make it to the restaurant which was located on the second floor in quite an old building with Anglo/Dutch architecture.

Red and white wines for us

Bear in mind the term ‘hotel’ here is rather misleading because The Forbes doesn’t seem to offer any lodging services. All 4 levels were either a bar, a lounge, a restaurant or function rooms. As much as we loved the charm of an old building with character, we thought that the dining room could do with a few touch-ups. That aside, we were surprised that we’re only the 3rd table occupying the restaurant that night.

Salt and pepper calamari Starters

We were served our wines as listed on the deal, and thankfully they turned out to be quite all right. The Salt and Pepper Calamari though, tasted as if they’ve just been defrosted and deep fried. Even though the batter was coated nicely, they calamari was dry and tough, making it very difficult to chew. The portion shown was also a big contrast to what was displayed on the Groupon website.

Forbes

Grilled Barramundi

When it came to Saucer’s main course of Grilled Barramundi, he was sorely disappointed to see that the barramundi fillet came looking limp and soggy. It looked like it was overcooked especially on the edges, and the meat was not as firm or fresh as he’d expected it to me. And it was certainly no match to what was shown on the Groupon website too!

Forbes

Rump Steak

I was given a choice of either the barramundi, chicken schnitzel or Rump Steak, so I chose the latter. I ordered for it to be medium rare, but it was strangely well-done on one side and medium on the other side of the steak. Pardon my poor pictures because they were taken with my iPhone 3Gs in quite a dark environment.

Forbes

Medium to well-done steak

The last item on the list was a dessert in the form of Chocolate Cake. Even though it was moist and chocolatey, there were quite a few occasions when both Saucer and I bit into solid sugar crystals. We’re not sure if it was baked that way on purpose, but we certainly didn’t like biting into raw sugar in the crystallized form.

Forbes

Chocolate cake

The 3-course meal with a glass of wine that we had that night was sold at $30 per person normally, but we bought our coupon at $29 for 2. If what we had that night was equivalent to what would be served on a normal $30 meal, there would be no way that we’re returning. The quality of the food was just not there. That, coupled with the false promises/pictures shown on the website, taught us the lesson to think twice before purchasing any group-buying deals.

i have given up on group buying websites for cheap meals a long time ago unless its a restaurant that i have personally been to..got to also look at the fine print when it comes to whats being offered on the menu and when you can use it (some places restrict weekend dining too)..

if you really want to save, you should consider getting a copy of the entertainment book, vouchers are either a buy 1 main free 1 main or a 25% discount on your meal up to a certain $ value.

Yup heard of the Entertainment book too, but we don’t go for fine dining that much so I don’t think we’ll use it enough :P

yikes, it’s always disappointing when outlets lure customers in with deals like this. it’ll help them make a quick buck, but since those customers won’t return, there’s really no point, right…

Indeed I’m not returning.. I guess most restauranteurs only think for short term?

Oh no! Sorry to hear you had a bad meal… the Groupon photo certainly is overstating what they would actually serve for the deal .

Yea, well it serves as a lesson to everyone who’s thinking of buying a Groupon restaurant deal. At least read prior reviews before purchasing so that they’d know what to expect :D

How annoying! I’ve been burned by Groupon deals before. Several times the restaurant was not equipped to deal with the increase in customers and had poor service. Other times, they unexpectedly force you to order from a special menu that is not a great deal at all. I’m over it!

I hear you girl! It’s definitely a good lesson learnt.. fortunately it wasn’t that expensive a lesson, but it did require much effort making reservation weeks beforehand! :P

Poor you! That’s a rip-off. I’ve become very wary of group buying sites. My latest eyelash extensions disaster made me even more cautious. Some deals are just “too good to be true”.

You’re right babe! We should be extra careful with deals now.. there’s no such thing as free lunch indeed. LOL

    iamthewitch Reply:

Well I guess it could be still frozen, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was. Thanks for the compliment girl! ;)

I have been hit with something like this before. Hence, better think twice before jumping into such deals.

I think I will never buy any group buying deals cos a lot of times I found them to offer poorer quality of food. What’s the point of cheap and lousy right? I rather pay more and have good quality food!

    iamthewitch Reply:

I know! I think most restauranteurs are not grasping the point of a Groupon, which is to give customers the same experience at a promotional price, with the hope of them returning in the future. They certainly won’t get returning customers if they serve sub-par food!

Really cakap tak serupa bikin. Can see the portion of calamari so small. Even the slice of lemon is nearly larger than that.

The meat also looked quite small portion.

I seldom buy from these deals website too. Bought twice and both times not satisgactory. Feels the food given is not up to expectation. Moreover gets treated like second class citizens.

Forbes Hotel is quite old, it’s been around for years. Hotels in Oz, don’t necessarily refer to the 5 star hotels we are familiar with. It’s usually the local pub, take note esp when in country towns.
