Whenever the weather forecast shows sunny and clear skies during the weekend, we’d have the urge to go out, take a walk and just enjoy the sun. It didn’t matter where we go really, as long as we have a good dose of fresh air and bright sun under the blue sky. Yesterday was one of those days, and we decided to take the train out to the city to explore. Little did we know that it was the Coffee Aroma Festival weekend, and there was a tremendous crowd around The Rocks area. We joined in the long queues for coffee and samples of sweets, but decided that we needed a place to just sit down and relax after a couple of hours. That was when we headed to Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe.

Belgian Waffle for high-tea
Located at the corner of a row of shops along The Rocks, there couldn’t be a more perfect location for this cafe. It was in the middle of the Foodies Market and just a short stroll from the Circular Quay, with a nice facade that looked inviting every time we passed by. We were there at half past 4pm and the crowd dispersed a little by then, so we managed to get a table within minutes.

Guylian Chocolate Special (AUD8.80)
Saucer ordered the Guylian Chocolate Special which came with a big dollop of fresh cream and chocolate sprinkles on top. It was essentially a mix of Guylian chocolate and coffee, lending it an aromatic coffee aftertaste on top of the rich hot chocolate.

Guylian Dark Chocolate (AUD7.80)
I ordered the Guylian Dark Chocolate, which came with a few pieces of dark chocolate in the cup. The hot chocolate was served in a separate jug, which was enough to serve 2 persons. The dark chocolate quite literally melted once I poured the hot chocolate into the cup, giving the hot chocolate a rich, thick and very aromatic flavour. It was smooth but not overly sweet, almost like drinking liquid Guylian dark chocolate. But that also meant that one could only have a few short sips at one time, due to its rich and thick texture.

Rich and dark hot chocolate
Apart from the fabulous hot chocolate drinks, we also ordered a Belgian Waffle with Guylian Chocolate Dip to be shared. It was served with a scoop of Guylian praline ice-cream of hazelnut flavour. The waffle was still warm when it was served, with slightly crumbly edges and airy, fluffy texture within. It was perfect with the hazelnut ice-cream and Guylian chocolate dip. The chocolate dip got better as the temperature dropped, for it started to thicken and became more chocolatey. I licked the chocolate dip clean!

Waffle and Belgian chocolate dip = perfect match

Airy and fluffy waffle
It was one of the nice afternoon tea sessions that I enjoyed very much – al fresco dining in the cool weather with a cup of hot drink in hand and fabulous company to boot. The hot chocolate hit all the right spots, although it could be a little cloying after the first cup. I suppose the lesson learnt was for us to share one mug of hot chocolate the next time we visit, so that we could really enjoy the drink without getting sick of it. But the waffle, oh the waffle, I would never get enough of it!
