No Thanks to Watervue

After our pleasant ferry ride and walk along the Manly Beach, it was good time for lunch. We spotted a nice al-fresco restaurant from across the beach at The Corso, called Watervue Restaurant, and seeing a reasonable crowd there, we decided to drop by. There was a waiter standing in front of the restaurant ushering people to enter with words like “Would you like to come in for lunch?” while handing over the menu. He seemed friendly enough and after a glance at the menu, we decided to take a seat at one of the few empty tables around. Once seated, we were informed that most items on the Special menu were discounted to $12.50, including steaks.

Al-fresco dining at Watervue Restaurant

There were about 10 items which were included in the Specials menu, but we were in the mood for steaks. I ordered a Grain Fed T-Bone steak at 300gm, done medium rare and topped with mushroom sauce. The steak arrived looking reasonably huge in portion, but had diluted mushroom sauce. Upon cutting, I realized that the steak was done probably a little too rare, as I could still see the beef tendon showing along the cross-section. Other than the sight of the red meat and tendon putting me off, the steak was not spectacular and towards the middle, it felt like I was eating raw meat. Also, did I mention that the mushroom sauce was not only diluted but rather bland too? It was definitely not worth paying the extra for.

A little too rare?

As for Saucer, he ordered the Grain Fed Rump Steak 300gm, also at medium rare. But what came out was probably done medium well, if not well-done. He noticed it immediately after the first 2 cuts, and decided to send it back for an exchange. It was quite obvious that the steak was done a little too well from its dry texture but to our dismay, the steak was returned with the comment from the chef that “That’s the way medium rare is”. Excuse me? Even though we might not be steak experts, we know very well how to differentiate between a medium rare and a well-done steak, and what we were presented was certainly not close to medium rare. Since we did not want to make a scene, we just kept quiet and let it go. It was a downer to our beautiful day out, no thanks to Watervue.

To sum it up, even though we liked the location and the ambience of the restaurant amidst palm trees and facing the beach, the standard of the food made sure that we would never return. It was one thing to serve us something that we did not order, but another thing to disagree with us. The rule of the game is “Customer is always right”, says Saucer. Thankfully, the rest of our day got better as we headed for our ferry trip back.

Oh well, don’t let the bad experience dampen your lovely day. :)

Perhaps that’s the reason why only 12% of voters like it. *points to the urbanspoon widget* :)

No good? But THIS is the place to indulge in steaks – Oz & NZ… Fresh, succulent, thick slabs… Yummmmm!!!!

The steak doesn’t look like a very good cut as you can still see all these sinew (they had neglected to remove it) but I usually eat rarer than that hahaha. Though if it’s a poor quality steak it won’t be nice rarer. That’s too bad about the arrogant chef. I’m sure they just want to save money by not cooking another one. Clearly someone who is not passionate about his crafts.

But… nice view!! I’d give anything for a vacation now in somewhere cold :D

You’re right, now that you mentioned it, I could see sinew on the steak! Well, since they’re so arrogant about their food then it’s the last time I’d visit them!

yikes! ya, i agree, it’s definitely a turn-off when the steaks aren’t cooked the way you’ve specified them to be. i like my beef to be rare to medium rare though, so the one you had might appeal to me :D

we paid them $100 for 2 people for something that was no where near of quality. chicken was so thin that you could nearly go the the woolies deli and buy shaved chicken that was thicker…. and the salad was a joke on the side.. haha oh a slice of cucumber and a slice of tomato! serious? my cats could have prepared a better salad!
we sat to our entree and while eating it they bring over our main… i was like… um we just got our entree so our main is a bit early…. then the waiter was say ‘oh but i already tried to serve it before’….. um did he walk out to our table the first time then walk back inside then straight back to our table to reserve it? but we were ignored and our main was cold by the end of it.

and while eating our main they pack up all the tables around us and take down the umbrella awning thing we are sitting under while it is spitting rain… go figure on that one. but its ok theres no way of making a formal complaint cause no one there listens and you cant mail or email them cause they have no details to do so!

Oh dear! It seems that your experience was worse than mine! I feel so sorry for you… They really should do something regarding their service and the food quality. Well one thing for sure, they are going to have 2 less returning customers from now on.
