Amber Chia’s Signature Course

  • Sharebar

Modeling Advanced Photo and Video was my final course at Amber Chia Academy, and one that was fully taught by none other than Amber Chia herself. I took this class end of last year, when there were only about 8 of us in it. The small class guaranteed full attention from Amber, as well as better concentration from us. Also dubbed as Amber Chia’s Signature Course, this class focused mainly on posing and facial expressions in front of the camera, with minimal catwalk required.

“Follow this pose”

At the beginning of the course, we were given a handbook with notes and pictures of various poses. The 5 main poses that we focused on were: Happy, Confident, Sexy, Strong and Dreamy. Each of this pose required different techniques on the eyes, mouth, neck, shoulders and legs. For example, a Sexy pose requires our eyes to be sensual, and our lips to be partially open. A Strong pose would mean strong-looking eyes and a strong jawline (by clenching your teeth).

Eyes send the strongest message

To demonstrate the various poses we learnt, my classmate Celine was kind enough to pose for my camera. Of course, this was only in our first or second class, when we were still learning. There’s definitely room for improvement, but doing this together was fun! We always need a buddy to practice together, to laugh at each other and to learn from each other’s mistakes.

Dreamy

Amber’s style of teaching was systematic. She taught us how to pose starting with the eyes first. By covering the rest of our face, we’re supposed to portray the different emotions just through our eyes. After the eyes, we moved on to our lips, and then our neck, shoulder and hands. By using different angles with our neck and shoulders, we could come up with tonnes of combination for a photo shoot. What Amber always encouraged us to do was to feel the emotion and let our imagination run wild. There’s no room to be shy in the class, so she always asked us to be creative, to be daring and to express ourselves.

Happy pose

Even though we were quite shy during our first couple of classes, we began to warm up in the third class onwards, and started to be more adventurous with our posing. It’s amazing knowing what we can do with our face in front of the mirror, if we would only set ourselves free and go crazy with posing. :)

The cost RM2,800 is not too expensive. I am sure you have learned valuable poses and gained the confidence to make you the next Malaysia super model!
