I always thought TeoChew food revolved around plain porridge, salted egg or steamed fish. Being a fellow TeoChew myself, I was surprised to find out that there’s so much more to Teochew cuisine than that. Recently, a visit to Teow Chew Meng left me wondering why I hadn’t been eating more of the delightful TeoChew cuisine!

This restaurant was recommended by Saucer’s friend, Alan, and during one cold and calm night, after the rain subsided, we went to the restaurant located at SS14. We wanted to order the Octopus as appetizer but it was out of stock! So the waiter recommended Kerabu Mango instead. I am personally not a fan of anything sour so I didn’t try much of this.

I was more interested in the next dish though – 3 Taste Oyster, arrived on a plate with huge and juicy little angels, waiting to be devoured by the hungry demons. *LOL* This dish reminded me of Oh Chien, but without the egg and flour, which I thought was a gimmick to make the dish look bigger than it really is. The 3 Taste Oyster came fuss-free, with just the oysters and delicious gravy! Slightly sweet, spicy and just a tad sour, this was definitely my type of appetizer!

The next dish was the Seafood Roll, or more fondly known as ‘Lor Bak’. This arrived piping hot with such an irresistible aroma that I couldn’t stop myself from burning my tongue!
It was all worth it though! The skin was amazingly thin, golden and crispy! The filling was also generous and moreish, making one addicted within the first bite. This was so good we ended up ordering a second plate!

Moving on to the mains, we ordered two of their signature dishes. The first one was the Sharkfin Mee Sua Tow, served with thick gravy, an abundance of seafood, rice flour noodles and what was camouflaged to be shark’s fin. Of course, with the price that we were charged, I didn’t expect real shark’s fin to be used, but I did enjoy the thick and delicious gravy, almost like drinking shark’s fin soup! I also loved the combination of the soft mee sua with the springy and firm texture of shark’s fin, giving it a good balance of soft and hard.

Last but not least, we had their signature Oyster Mee as well, served with a generous amount of Super HUGE oysters! And I mean, really huge! This was, hands down, the best dish of the night! The gravy was not overly thick but very flavourful and the noodles were so smooth and slippery-slurp! It was the perfect comfort food. Of course, don’t forget the gigantic oysters generously scattered within the pot of gold. I could eat all of this and not feel guilty.

For dessert, we all had a bowl of Teow Chew Yam Paste with Ginkgo on top. This was a little on the sweet side, with thick and gooey smooth yam paste to give the palate a sweet finish. The ginkgo was fresh and sweet too! However, by this time, I was already too full to be able to finish the whole bowl to myself! This was indeed quite filling.

After my visit to Teow Chew Meng, I am now a fan of TeoChew cuisine.
I am glad there are restaurants like Teow Chew Meng who help to spread the spirit of delicious TeoChew cuisine to the country, at the same time educating people like me, before the TeoChew cuisine dies a silent death. Hopefully more restaurants would come up with similar concept type of food!
